On the 4th of July 2019, the Sydney Morning Herald reported, “…Former Wallabies front-rower Bill Young has added to his family’s pub empire with the purchase of the popular Glebe watering hole, the Friend in Hand, for an estimated price of $10 million. In a twist, the Friend in Hand was sold by the private Byrne family, which bought the pub 36 years ago – from the Young family.

Greencore was contracted by the Young Hotels Group to design and renovate their newly acquired pub and bring it to its former glory to attract a new and younger discerning demographic in the inner-city suburb of Glebe.

The hotel was originally established in 1834 and over the years gained love and reputation among its patrons, who fondly referred to it as more than a museum than a pub.

The proposed works envisioned to convert an existing Outdoor Dining Area into an extension of the current Gaming Room with a separate outside entrance. The intended design allowed increasing the capacity of Gaming Machines from the current 15 to 20 in total.

Additional works included the refurbishment of the Dining Room, construction of new amenities, including new female and male bathrooms, new Bistro with new joinery items and a new Gaming Room VIP room.

The challenge for the client (Young Hotels Group) was to address 3 main concerns:

  1. Completing renovations within a specified timeframe, keeping the project on track for pre-Christmas delivery;
  2. Carrying out renovations while the pub is fully operational and accessible to patrons and guests;
  3. Operating in the absence of a designer, where a prospective contractor has to provide architectural and design services;

To efficiently address the client’s concerns Green-core provided a number of solutions.

During the procurement stage, Green-core identified critical path lead time items including Poker Machine Bases and Screens, Fixed Cupboards and Joinery, Retractable Velux Skylight Blinds, Louvred External Wall to Queen Street, Feature Wall Panelling, Frameless Glass Auto Doors to VIP Gaming keeping the program on track for pre-Christmas project delivery.

Green-core has extensive experience managing projects in live working environments and their performance exceeded expectations on this project as well. Throughout construction, Green-core isolated the work areas within accessible hoardings. The Outdoor Gaming Works included an A-Class Hoarding on Queen Street to allow for a new VIP Gaming entrance.

The new VIP Gaming Experience with a Separate VIP Gaming Entrance transformed the pub into a modern hospitality oasis, enhancing its’ character and charisma.
